The Principle of Mentalism
“The Universe is Mental held in the Mind of THE ALL.” (Chapter V, The Kybalion)
The principle states that the universe itself is a creation of the mind. Just as humans create thoughts in their consciousness, reality is seen as a thought within the infinite Divine Mind (“The All”). Everything we experience is a projection of the Universal Mind.
The Principle of Mentalism is the foundation of both mysticism and practical success. Whether in alchemy, spiritual awakening, or self-improvement, the mind is the ultimate tool for transformation.
Reality is fundamentally mental, not physical.
Matter is a manifestation of consciousness rather than an independent, solid entity.
Everything exists within The All (Universal Mind).
Just as dreams exist within a dreamer’s mind, the universe exists within the mind of The All.
Our minds are connected to the Universal Mind.
Since all things arise from this Universal Consciousness, our own thoughts and consciousness can shape reality and influence our reality.
This is the foundation for Hermetic wisdom, metaphysics, and even modern consciousness studies.
Mentalism in Mystical Traditions
Across mystical traditions, true mastery is about aligning the mind with universal laws. Throughout history, these mystical traditions have echoed Mentalism in different forms:
Mentalism and Alchemy (Turning Lead into Gold)
In Spiritual Alchemy the idea of transmuting lead into gold is symbolic.
Lead (Base Consciousness) → Gold (Higher Awareness): The human mind starts in a “raw” state, bound by illusion and ignorance (lead). Through mental discipline, wisdom, and enlightenment, the mind is purified (gold).
Mental Transmutation: Alchemy teaches that thought precedes physical reality. By changing one’s thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, one can change external circumstances.
“As above, so below; As within, so without.” could mean that inner transformation (mind) leads to outer transformation (life). Mental alchemy is the ability to transmute negativity into wisdom and enlightenment.
Kabbalah (Jewish Mysticism): The mind’s ability to channel divine will is key to manifesting change.
Hinduism & Vedanta: The concept of Maya (illusion) states that the material world is a mental projection of Brahman (Universal Mind).
Taoism: Tao (Universal Mind) flows through everything and those who align their mind with the Tao flow effortlessly through life.
Mentalism in Psychology & Philosophy
Mentalism in psychology refers to the study of the mind as the key driver of human behavior. It opposes behaviorism, which claims that only external actions matter, not thoughts. Philosophers like Descartes (“I think, therefore I am“) and Immanuel Kant argued that the mind is the foundation of all human experience.
The Philosophy of Immanuel Kant (1724–1804)
Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher who revolutionized Western thought with his ideas on epistemology (theory of knowledge), ethics, metaphysics, and aesthetics. His work bridges rationalism and empiricism, shaping much of modern philosophy.
Kant argued that our minds actively shape reality rather than just passively receiving it. He introduced two key concepts:
- A Priori vs. A Posteriori Knowledge
- A priori: Knowledge before experience (e.g., mathematics).
- A posteriori: Knowledge from experience (e.g., science).
- Phenomena vs. Noumena
- Phenomena: The world as we perceive it (shaped by our minds).
- Noumena: The world as it is in itself (which we can never fully know).
We don’t perceive reality directly; instead, our mind structures experience using built-in concepts like space, time, and causality.
Quantum Entanglement of Consciousness
According to Francisco Di Biase (Neurosurgeon-neurologist, consciousness researcher and author), consciousness informs our universe (through quantum information and entanglement), influences matter, energy and space-time. His theory synthesises previous work and suggests that ‘This non-local quantum-holographic cosmos manifests itself through a quantum-holographic transpersonal consciousness, indivisibly interconnecting the human brain to all levels of the universe.
Implementation of Mentalism
Your thoughts and beliefs directly influence your reality—master them, and you master life.
Law of Attraction & Manifestation
“Like attracts like” → If you focus on positive thoughts, you attract positive outcomes. This aligns with the idea that the mind shapes reality.
Mind Over Matter (Health & Well-Being)
Placebo Effect: The belief in healing causes actual healing. Meditation & Visualization can rewire the brain to reduce stress and increase happiness.
Creative Visualization & Goal Achievement
Athletes, business leaders, and artists use mental rehearsal to achieve success. By vividly imagining desired outcomes, you train your subconscious mind to create them.
